In SMT production, the Peel Strength of the Cover Tape is a critical parameter. Excessive peel force can cause carrier tape vibration and component jumping; insufficient force may lead to the tape opening spontaneously during transport.
1. Impact of Sealing Temperature and Pressure
For Heat Activated Adhesives (HAA), sealing temperature and pressure are the core factors determining peel force. Excessively high temperature or pressure leads to over-melting of the adhesive layer, causing a spike in peel force; conversely, it leads to weak sealing. It is recommended to adjust to the optimal sealing window based on the carrier tape material (PC or PS).
2. Aging Time
Freshly sealed carrier tapes often have unstable peel force. After 24-72 hours of room temperature standing (Aging), the adhesive layer crystallization stabilizes, and the peel force reaches its true value. Therefore, test data should be based on results after aging.
3. Material Compatibility
Not all cover tapes match perfectly with all carrier tapes. For example, certain cover tapes perform well on PS carrier tapes but may cause "sticking" issues on PC carrier tapes. Choosing a cover tape that is chemically compatible with the carrier tape substrate is the fundamental solution.
