EIA-481 is the global standard established by the Electronic Industries Alliance for the automated tape packaging of Surface Mount Devices (SMD). Adhering to this standard is a prerequisite for ensuring seamless integration between carrier tapes and Pick & Place machines.
1. Core Dimension Definitions
When reading carrier tape drawings, the following parameters are most critical:
- W (Width): The overall width of the carrier tape (e.g., 8mm, 12mm, 16mm, 24mm, etc.).
- P1 (Pitch): The distance from the center of one pocket to the center of the next.
- Ao, Bo, Ko: Represent the internal length, width, and depth of the pocket, respectively. These three values directly determine whether the component can be placed smoothly without shaking.
- P0: The pitch of the sprocket holes (positioning holes), standardly 4.0mm.
2. Reel Specifications
The EIA-481 standard also regulates reels. Common reel diameters are 7 inches (178mm) and 13 inches (330mm). The inner width (W1) and outer width (W2) of the reel must match the tape width to prevent unraveling during transport.
3. Why is the Standard Important?
If carrier tape dimensions deviate from the EIA-481 standard (e.g., insufficient Ko depth, or excessive Ao/Bo tolerance), it can lead to nozzle pickup failures (missed picks), component sideways standing or flipping, and even jamming of the feeder, severely impacting production efficiency. All Ascen Technology products strictly strictly follow this standard, with tolerances controlled at the micron level.
