Polystyrene (PS), as the main substrate for carrier tapes, is inherently an insulating material. To meet the electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection requirements for electronic component packaging, it must undergo modification. Currently, the technical routes for conductive PS carrier tape materials, both domestically and internationally, mainly fall into two categories: Antistatic Agent Filling and Carbon Filling.
1. Antistatic Agent Filling Type
Technical Characteristics: A significant advantage of this route is that product coloring is unrestricted, allowing for the production of transparent or colored carrier tapes. Low-molecular-weight antistatic agents have minimal impact on the physical properties of the product, with surface resistivity typically between 10^10 - 10^13 Ω. However, the drawback is that the electrical properties of low-molecular-weight products gradually diminish over time (due to migration or volatilization).
International Trends: The current major development trend internationally is the research and production of High-Molecular-Weight Antistatic Agents (also known as Permanent Antistatic Agents). Unlike low-molecular types, they do not lose conductivity after washing or long-term use.
- Major Varieties: Polyether type, Quaternary Ammonium Salt type, Sulfonic Acid type, Acid Graft Copolymers, Ionic type, etc.
- Major Manufacturers: Sanyo Chemical, Sumitomo Seika (Japan); Ciba Specialty Chemicals, Clariant (Switzerland); Witco, Great Lakes (USA).
- Application Challenges: The addition amount of high-molecular agents is usually 5-15 times that of low-molecular ones, and compatibility with the resin must be considered (requiring suitable compatibilizers). High costs limit their large-scale application.
2. Carbon Filling Type
Technical Characteristics: The fillers for this series of PS carrier tapes are mainly Conductive Carbon Black, graphite, and carbon fiber. The volume resistivity of the finished product can reach 10^2 - 10^9 Ω·cm, offering excellent conductivity.
Why is Carbon Black Mainstream? Conductive polymer filled with carbon black is widely used for three main reasons:
- Cost Advantage: Conductive carbon black is relatively inexpensive, suitable for large-scale industrial production.
- High Adjustability: Formulas can be adjusted according to different conductivity needs, with resistance values varying widely between 10^2 - 10^9 Ω.
- Stable Performance: Conductivity is lasting and unaffected by environmental humidity, making it an ideal permanent antistatic material.
Limitations: Products made with carbon filling are limited to Black color. Additionally, large amounts of carbon black filling can significantly impact the mechanical properties (such as toughness) of the material, requiring mature modification technologies to balance conductivity and physical strength.
